Police have a launched a man-hunt for a criminal gang that abandoned three vehicles and loot during a high speed after they were caught stealing 1 000kg of electricity cables worth RTGS$10 000 in Goromonzi.

One of the gang members was arrested during the chase and is assisting the police with investigations.

Mashonaland East police spokesperson, Tendai Mwanza last week said, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Flora and Fauna Unit in Goromonzi received information that there were people stealing electricity copper cables at Arcturus Mine in Goromonzi.

“The detectives swiftly responded after teaming up with police officers from Goromonzi.  On arrival at the scene, the police saw the suspects loading copper cables into three motor vehicles,” said Mwanza.

“On realising that the police details had surrounded them, the suspects sped off towards Harare along the Arcturus Road with the police in pursuit before the suspects were blocked at the Lafarge Cement factory in Mabvuku.”

Mwanza said after a chase the suspects ran away, but a driver of one the vehicles was arrested and is currently assisting the police with investigations.

“The vehicles were searched and ten rolls of Zesa copper overhead conductors and cables, bolt cutters and spanners were recovered,” he said.

Despite the current mandatory 10-year sentence for suspects convicted of vandalising or stealing electricity infrastructure, the illicit activities continue to rise across the country.
