Sianchali at the double as CAPS United keep title destiny in their hands

CAPS United 2-1 ZPC Kariba

HARARE – Newman Sianchali rose from the bench to rescue CAPS United and keep their destiny in their hands in the Premier Soccer League title race.

United trailed joint leaders Chicken Inn and FC Platinum by a point going into Thursday’s match after their title rivals played and won a day earlier.

An upset was on the cards after Jimu Gwara thrust the visitors ahead at the National Sports Stadium as ZPC held on to lead at the breather.

United needed to change things, and coach Darlington Dodo assisted by Stewart Murisa turned to the former Highlanders striker just after the restart.

Sianchali repayed Dodo’s faith as he fired in an overhead kick to level matters just before the hour mark.

ZPC Kariba were then reduced to 10 men six minutes from the end when defender Bornface Zuberi received a second booking for a lunge on Joel Ngodzo.

The sending off blew more wind into United’s sails and just over a minute later they had the game won when Sianchali headed in Valentine Musarurwa’s cross, sending the home fans unto delirium.

It was the sort of fighting spirit that United will need in their final four games to take the crown. The Harare giants know they will be champions if they win all four, including the big Harare derby with Dynamos and a season-ending meeting with direct rivals FC Platinum.
